Salvation is the good news that God saves people from sin through Jesus Christ.
Every person needs salvation. It does not matter where we come from, how old we are, how much money we have, or how many good things we have done. We all need Jesus.
The Bible says:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
— Romans 3:23
Sin is anything we think, say, or do that goes against God’s will.
Sin includes lying, stealing, hatred, pride, jealousy, sexual sin, unforgiveness, and disobedience. Sin is also refusing to trust God and refusing to live according to His Word.
No person is without sin.
Some people may think, “I am not as bad as other people.” But salvation is not about comparing ourselves with others. We must compare our lives with God’s perfect standard.
God is holy. He is completely pure and without sin.
We have all failed to live a perfect life.
This is why we need salvation.
1. Understand That You Are a Sinner
The first step is to be honest with yourself and with God.
You must understand that you have sinned.
The Bible says:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
— Romans 3:23
This verse says that all people have sinned.
It does not say that only some people have sinned. It says all have sinned.
We are born with a sinful nature. As we grow, we also choose to do wrong things.
We may lie because we are afraid.
We may become angry and speak hurtful words.
We may hold hatred in our hearts.
We may refuse to forgive someone.
We may become proud and think we are better than others.
We may disobey God even when we know what is right.
These things show that sin is present in our lives.
The Bible says:
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
— 1 John 1:8
To deceive ourselves means to lie to ourselves.
A person who says, “I have never sinned,” is not being honest.
God already knows everything about us. He knows our thoughts, our words, our actions, and the hidden things in our hearts.
We cannot hide from Him.
The Bible says:
“For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.”
— Luke 12:2
Admitting that you are a sinner does not mean that there is no hope for you.
It means that you now understand why you need Jesus.
A sick person must first know that he is sick before he will look for help.
In the same way, we must understand that sin is a serious problem before we will understand our need for salvation.
Sin separates us from God.
The Bible says:
“But your iniquities have separated between you and your God.”
— Isaiah 59:2
God loves us, but sin stands between us and Him.
We cannot remove this sin our own strength.
We cannot wash away sin doing good works.
We cannot remove sin giving money.
We cannot remove sin going to church.
We cannot remove sin trying to become a better person.
Good things are important, but good works cannot pay for sin.
Only Jesus can save us from sin.
2. Understand the Result of Sin
Sin has a result.
The Bible says:
“For the wages of sin is death.”
— Romans 6:23
A wage is something a person receives because of what he has done.
A worker receives wages for his work.
In the same way, sin has a wage.
The wage of sin is death.
This does not only mean physical death. It also means spiritual separation from God.
God is the source of life.
When we are separated from Him, we are spiritually dead.
The Bible says:
“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”
— Ephesians 2:1
Without Jesus, a person may be alive in the body, but spiritually separated from God.
Sin also leads to judgment.
The Bible says:
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”
— Hebrews 9:27
Every person will one day stand before God.
God is loving, but He is also just.
A just judge cannot pretend that evil does not matter.
God cannot call sin good.
He must judge sin because He is holy and just.
The Bible says:
“The soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
— Ezekiel 18:20
This is very serious.
But the message of salvation does not end with judgment.
Romans 6:23 also says:
“But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The first part of the verse tells us what sin brings.
The second part tells us what God gives.
Sin brings death.
God gives eternal life through Jesus Christ.
This is why the gospel is good news.
We deserve judgment, but God offers mercy.
We deserve punishment, but God offers forgiveness.
We deserve death, but God offers life.
3. Believe That God Loves You
Some people know that they are sinners, but they think God could never love them.
They may say, “I have done too many bad things.”
They may feel ashamed.
They may think that God only loves good people.
But the Bible teaches that God loves sinners.
The Bible says:
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
— Romans 5:8
Jesus did not wait for us to become perfect.
He came while we were still sinners.
God knows the worst things we have done, but He still calls us to come to Him.
His love is not based on our goodness.
His love comes from His own nature.
The Bible says:
“God is love.”
— 1 John 4:8
God’s love does not mean that He agrees with our sin.
True love does not ignore what destroys us.
Because God loves us, He calls us away from sin.
Because God loves us, He sent Jesus to save us.
The Bible says:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.”
— John 3:16
God did not only say that He loved us.
He showed His love.
He gave His Son.
Jesus came into this world for sinners.
The Bible says:
“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”
— 1 Timothy 1:15
Jesus came for the broken.
He came for the guilty.
He came for people who knew they needed mercy.
No person is too far from God.
No sin is greater than the power of Jesus to forgive.
The blood of Jesus is able to cleanse every person who truly comes to Him.
The Bible says:
“The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
— 1 John 1:7
It says all sin.
This does not give us permission to continue living in sin.
It shows us that when we truly repent and trust Christ, His grace is greater than our past.
4. Understand Who Jesus Is
To understand salvation, we must understand who Jesus is.
Jesus is not only a teacher.
He is not only a prophet.
He is not only a good man.
Jesus is the Son of God.
The Bible says:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
— John 1:1
The Bible also says:
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.”
— John 1:14
Jesus came from heaven and became a man.
He lived among people.
He became tired.
He became hungry.
He felt pain.
But Jesus never sinned.
The Bible says:
“Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.”
— 1 Peter 2:22
Jesus lived the perfect life that we could not live.
He fully obeyed God the Father.
He showed mercy to sinners.
He healed the sick.
He taught the truth.
He called people to repent.
He showed us the heart of God.
Jesus also said that He is the only way to the Father.
The Bible says:
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but me.”
— John 14:6
Jesus did not say, “I am one of many ways.”
He said, “I am the way.”
Salvation is found in Jesus alone.
The Bible says:
“Neither is there salvation in any other.”
— Acts 4:12
We cannot be saved through another person.
We cannot be saved through religion.
We cannot be saved through our family.
We cannot be saved because our parents believe.
We must personally trust in Jesus Christ.
5. Believe That Jesus Died for Your Sins
Jesus died on the cross.
His death was not an accident.
He gave His life willingly.
The Bible says:
“I lay down my life for the sheep.”
— John 10:15
Jesus knew that He had come to die.
On the cross, He took the punishment that sinners deserved.
The Bible says:
“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities.”
— Isaiah 53:5
A transgression is an act of disobedience against God.
An iniquity is sin and wrongdoing.
Jesus was wounded because of our sins.
He was punished so that we could receive peace with God.
The Bible says:
“The chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
— Isaiah 53:5
Jesus became our substitute.
A substitute is someone who takes another person’s place.
We were guilty, but Jesus took our place.
We deserved judgment, but Jesus carried our punishment.
The Bible says:
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:21
Jesus had no sin of His own.
He died for our sin.
On the cross, Jesus said:
“It is finished.”
— John 19:30
This means that the work needed to pay for sin was completed.
We do not need to add anything to the sacrifice of Jesus.
We do not need to save ourselves.
We cannot improve what Jesus has already finished.
We must trust in what He did.
6. Believe That Jesus Rose From the Dead
Jesus truly died.
He was buried.
But He did not remain in the grave.
On the third day, He rose again.
The Bible says:
“He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.”
— Matthew 28:6
The resurrection is very important.
If Jesus had remained dead, there would be no message of salvation.
But Jesus rose from the dead.
He defeated death.
He proved that He is the Son of God.
He showed that His sacrifice was accepted.
The Bible says:
“Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.”
— Romans 4:25
Because Jesus lives, everyone who trusts in Him can have eternal life.
Jesus said:
“Because I live, ye shall live also.”
— John 14:19
Christian faith is not faith in a dead leader.
We believe in the risen Lord.
Jesus is alive.
He hears prayer.
He saves.
He forgives.
He changes lives.
He is able to keep those who trust in Him.
The Bible says:
“He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God him.”
— Hebrews 7:25
7. Repent of Your Sins
Jesus calls sinners to repent.
The Bible says:
“Repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
— Mark 1:15
To repent means to turn.
It means turning away from sin and turning toward God.
Repentance is more than feeling sorry.
A person may feel sorry because he was caught.
A person may feel sorry because sin caused pain.
But true repentance is a change of heart.
You begin to agree with God that your sin is wrong.
You stop defending your sin.
You stop blaming other people.
You stop making excuses.
You come honestly before God.
The Bible says:
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.”
— Acts 3:19
Repentance does not mean that you become perfect before coming to Jesus.
You come to Jesus as you are.
But you come with a heart that is willing to leave sin behind.
You may not have the strength to change yourself.
That is why you need God.
God gives power to live a new life.
The Bible says:
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.”
— Ezekiel 36:26
True repentance will begin to produce change.
A person who once loved sin will begin to hate it.
A person who once ignored God will begin to seek Him.
A person who once refused to forgive will ask God for help to forgive.
A person who once lived only for himself will begin to desire God’s will.
This change may happen step step, but there will be a new direction.
Repentance is not turning over a new leaf your own strength.
It is turning to God and asking Him to change your heart.
8. Believe in Jesus Christ
The Bible says:
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”
— Acts 16:31
To believe in Jesus means more than believing that He existed.
Many people believe that Jesus was a real person.
But saving faith means trusting Him.
You must trust that Jesus is who the Bible says He is.
You must trust that He died for your sins.
You must trust that He rose again.
You must trust that He alone can save you.
Imagine that you are drowning in deep water.
Someone comes to rescue you.
It is not enough to say, “I believe that person can save me.”
You must allow that person to rescue you.
In the same way, saving faith means placing your life in the hands of Jesus.
You stop trusting in your own goodness.
You stop trusting in your good works.
You stop trusting in religion.
You stop trusting in your own plans.
You trust in Christ alone.
The Bible says:
“For grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.”
— Ephesians 2:8
Grace means that God gives us what we do not deserve.
We do not deserve forgiveness.
We do not deserve eternal life.
But God offers these gifts through Jesus.
Faith is the hand that receives the gift.
The Bible continues:
“Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
— Ephesians 2:9
No one will enter heaven and say, “I saved myself.”
No one will be able to boast.
Every saved person will give glory to Jesus.
9. Confess Jesus as Lord
The Bible says:
“If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
— Romans 10:9
To confess Jesus as Lord means that you openly agree that Jesus is Lord.
He is the ruler of your life.
He is your Master.
He is your King.
You are no longer living only for yourself.
You now belong to Him.
The Bible says:
“Ye are not your own. For ye are bought with a price.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19–20
Jesus paid for us with His own blood.
When we receive Him, our lives belong to Him.
Confessing Jesus as Lord also means that we are not ashamed of Him.
Jesus said:
“Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.”
— Matthew 10:32
This does not mean that saying certain words saves us itself.
A person can say religious words without true faith.
God looks at the heart.
The confession of the mouth should come from real belief in the heart.
When you truly believe in Jesus, you will desire to follow Him and speak about Him.
10. Receive God’s Forgiveness
When you repent and believe in Jesus, God forgives you.
The Bible says:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.”
— 1 John 1:9
God does not forgive because we deserve it.
He forgives because Jesus paid for our sins.
The blood of Jesus cleanses us.
The Bible says:
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.”
— Ephesians 1:7
Redemption means that a price was paid to set someone free.
Jesus paid the price for our freedom.
When God forgives you, He does not continue holding your sins against you.
The Bible says:
“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”
— Psalm 103:12
East and west never meet.
This picture shows how completely God removes the guilt of those who trust in Him.
The Bible also says:
“Their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.”
— Hebrews 10:17
This does not mean that God forgets because His memory is weak.
It means that He no longer counts those sins against the forgiven person.
You may still remember your past.
Other people may still remember your past.
But when God forgives you, your guilt before Him is removed.
Do not keep trying to pay for sins that Jesus has already paid for.
Receive His forgiveness with faith and gratitude.
11. Receive New Life
Salvation is not only the forgiveness of the past.
God also gives new life.
The Bible says:
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
When a person is saved, God begins a new work in that person.
You may still have the same face.
You may still live in the same house.
You may still have many of the same duties.
But something has changed inside.
God gives you a new heart.
He gives you new desires.
He gives you a new relationship with Him.
The Bible says:
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God.”
— John 1:12
Through Jesus, you become part of God’s family.
You can call God your Father.
You can come to Him in prayer.
You can know that He hears you.
You can know that you are not alone.
God also gives the Holy Spirit to those who belong to Christ.
The Holy Spirit helps believers understand the Bible, resist sin, pray, grow, and live for God.
The Bible says:
“Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19
The Christian life is not lived human strength alone.
God Himself lives in His people through the Holy Spirit.
12. Begin to Follow Jesus
Salvation is the beginning of a new life.
Jesus said:
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
— Luke 9:23
To follow Jesus means that we learn from Him and obey Him.
It means that His will becomes more important than our own desires.
Following Jesus will not always be easy.
There may be times when people do not understand you.
There may be times when you must say no to sin.
There may be times when obedience costs you something.
But Jesus is worthy.
He gave His life for us.
Now we live for Him.
The Bible says:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
— John 14:15
We do not obey Jesus to earn salvation.
We obey because we have been saved.
Obedience is a response to His love.
A saved person should begin to grow in certain ways.
You should read the Bible.
The Bible is God’s Word.
It teaches us who God is, how He saves, and how we should live.
The Bible says:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
— Psalm 119:105
You should pray.
Prayer is speaking with God.
You can thank Him, praise Him, confess your sins, ask for help, and pray for others.
The Bible says:
“Pray without ceasing.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:17
You should join a faithful church that teaches the Bible.
You need other believers.
You need teaching, encouragement, correction, prayer, and fellowship.
The Bible says:
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.”
— Hebrews 10:25
You should be baptized.
Baptism does not save you, but it is an important act of obedience.
It shows openly that you have trusted in Jesus and now belong to Him.
Jesus said:
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”
— Matthew 28:19
You should also tell others about Jesus.
You do not need to know everything before you share your faith.
You can simply tell people what Jesus has done for you.
The Bible says:
“Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee.”
— Mark 5:19
13. Do Not Depend on Feelings Alone
Some people expect to feel something very strong when they come to Jesus.
They may expect to cry.
They may expect to feel great joy.
They may expect every fear to disappear at once.
Sometimes people do feel strong emotions.
Sometimes they do not.
Salvation is based on God’s promise, not on feelings.
Feelings can change from day to day.
God’s Word does not change.
The Bible says:
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.”
— John 3:36
God does not say that the person who always feels saved has eternal life.
He says that the person who believes in the Son has eternal life.
Place your trust in God’s Word.
When doubts come, look again to Jesus.
Remember what He did on the cross.
Remember that He rose again.
Remember His promise:
“Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”
— John 6:37
Jesus will not reject the person who truly comes to Him.
14. Come to Jesus Today
Do not wait until you feel perfect.
You will never make yourself perfect.
Come to Jesus now.
Do not say, “I will come later.”
None of us knows how much time we have.
The Bible says:
“Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
— 2 Corinthians 6:2
God is calling you to repent and believe.
You may have heard the gospel many times.
You may know many Bible verses.
You may go to church.
But you must personally respond to Jesus.
You must personally trust Him.
The Bible says:
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
— Romans 10:13
Whosoever means anyone.
Rich or poor.
Young or old.
Educated or uneducated.
Religious or not religious.
A person with a clean past or a painful past.
Anyone who truly calls on Jesus in faith can be saved.
Do not allow shame to keep you away.
Do not allow fear to keep you away.
Do not allow pride to keep you away.
Come to Jesus.
He is ready to forgive.
He is ready to save.
He is ready to give you new life.
A Prayer of Repentance and Faith
This prayer does not save you because of the words alone.
Jesus saves.
Pray these words only if they truly express what is in your heart.
Heavenly Father,
I come before You today because I know that I need You.
I admit that I am a sinner.
I have sinned in my thoughts, in my words, and in my actions.
I have done things that are wrong in Your sight.
I have also failed to do many things that are right.
I cannot hide my sin from You.
You know everything about me.
I am sorry for my sin.
I do not want to continue living far from You.
I turn away from my sin, and I turn toward You.
Please have mercy on me.
I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son.
I believe that He came into this world and lived a perfect life.
I believe that He died on the cross for my sins.
I believe that He took the punishment that I deserved.
I believe that He was buried.
I believe that He rose again on the third day.
I believe that Jesus is alive.
I know that I cannot save myself.
My good works cannot save me.
My religion cannot save me.
My own strength cannot save me.
I place my faith in Jesus Christ alone.
Lord Jesus, please forgive me.
Wash me and make me clean.
Remove my guilt.
Give me a new heart.
Give me a new life.
Be my Lord and my Savior.
Teach me to love You.
Teach me to obey Your Word.
Help me to turn away from sin.
Help me to forgive others.
Help me to walk in truth.
Fill me with Your Holy Spirit.
Give me strength to follow You every day.
Help me to read Your Word.
Help me to pray.
Lead me to a faithful church where I can grow.
Give me courage to tell others about You.
Thank You for loving me.
Thank You for dying for me.
Thank You for rising again.
Thank You for offering me forgiveness.
Thank You for the gift of eternal life.
I give my life to You.
From this day forward, help me to live for Your glory.
In the name of Jesus Christ,
